In the 93rd Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition, Paul received an Honorable Mention in the Humor category for "What's So Funny About Tennis" .

Paul's fourth book, The Fein Points of Tennis: Technique and Tactics to Unleash Your Talent, was named a Silver Winner in the Adventure, Sports, and Recreation category in the Foreword Reviews 2021 INDIES Book of the Year competition.

Paul's 2022 essay, "Should Wimbledon Have Banned Russian and Belarusian Players?", was awarded Honorable Mention in the Nonfiction Essay or Article category of the 91st Annual Writer's Digest Writing Competition.

In the 2016 Writers-Editors Network International Writing Competition, Paul received the 1st-Place award in the Nonfiction category for a feature titled "Let's Give Djokovic Some Love" and the 2nd-Place award for a column titled "Surprises, Demises, and Reprises at the US Open."

In the 2015 Writers-Editors Network International Writing Competition, Paul received the 1st Place award in the “Previously Published Nonfiction Article/Essay Book Chapter” category for his essay, “The Beauty of Federer.”

In the Carteret Writers 2015 Contest, Paul received a third place award in the Nonfiction Category for his essay, "Will Serena and Novak Capture the Holy Grail of Tennis?"

In the Carteret Writers 2014 Contest, Paul received a second-place award in the Nonfiction Category for his feature, ”Big Sister Na Chops Up Little Onion.”

In the 2010 United States Tennis Writers' Association Writing Contest, Paul won 1st Place in the "Service" category for his article, "The Importance of Momentum in Tennis." It was his ninth 1st Place award in the annual USTWA writing contest in the past 11 years. Paul also won 2nd Place in the "Service" category for his article, "Defend and Conquer."

In the 2009 United States Tennis Writers' Association Writing Contest, Paul won 1st Place in the "Service" category for his article, "Lessons from the French Open." It was his eighth 1st Place award in the annual USTWA writing contest in the past ten years. Paul also won 2nd Place in the "Column/Commentary" category for his article, "The Foot Fault that Freaked out Serena."

In the 2008 United States Tennis Writers' Association Writing Contest, Paul won First Prize in the "Service Story" Category for his article, "Ten Reasons Why Topspin Is Essential on Clay." It was his seventh First Prize award in the annual USTWA writing contest in the past nine years. In the same category, Paul also won Second Prize for his article, "The Art of Anticipation."

Paul won First Prize in the 2007 United States Tennis Writers' Association Writing Contest in the "Service Story" Category for his story, "Playing Drop Shots." It was his sixth 1st Prize award in the annual USTWA writing contest in the past eight years.

Paul also won 2nd Prize in the 2007 USTWA Writing Contest in the "Hard News/Enterprise" Category for his story, "How Successful Is the U.S. Open Series?" and 2nd Prize in the "Feature Story (Pro Tennis)" Category for his story, "Tennis for the Bloody Fun of It."

Paul received an 8th Place award in the Print or Online Article category of the 81st Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition for his article, “Rafael Nadal’s Annus Mirabilis.”

Paul received Honorable Mention awards in the Print or Online Article category of the 88th Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition for his articles, “How Should Female Athletes Be Portrayed?” and “25 Great Things about Tennis.”

He also received an Honorable Mention award in the Print or Online Article category of the 89th Annual Writer's Digest Writing Competition for his article, "Coco's Dream Debut at Wimbledon."

Paul also won 2nd Prize in the 2007 USTWA Writing Contest in the “Hard News/Enterprise” Category for his story, “How Successful Is the U.S. Open Series?” and 2nd Prize in the “Feature Story (Pro Tennis)” Category for his story, “Tennis for the Bloody Fun of It.”

* First Prize award in the Feature Category of the 2003 United States Tennis Writers Association writing contest for his piece titled "When They Were Kings." The judges deemed the feature to be "The best written brief historical recap in many years."
