Fight Climate Change to Save Tennis and All Sports

A 2018 essay titled “The Most Intriguing ‘What ifs?’ in Tennis History” in my new book, GAME CHANGERS: How the Greatest Players, Matches, and Controversies Transformed Tennis, ends with this dire hypothetical.

GameChangers

“What if extreme weather events, air pollution, and viral pandemics increasingly force the postponement and cancellation of tennis tournaments and recreational play?”

As we’ve learned from the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and increasingly frequent devastating weather events, such as the recent Hurricane Melvin in the U.S. Southeast, the consequences have proved tragic. It’s no longer hypothetical!

The sports world has a special responsibility in times of raging wildfires, floods, extreme heat, hurricanes, air and water pollution, droughts, avalanches, or other almost-apocalyptic scenarios. We must learn more about this worsening crisis and fight back to save the games we love and our health to play them. Athlete activism is embracing climate activism as never before.

In the Warming Up: How Climate Change Is Changing Sport, sports ecologist Madeleine Orr tells readers how they can become engaged in this climate fight—before it’s too late. I highly recommend this timely, authoritative, essential book.
