CHICOPEE – Tennis runs through the veins of Paul Fein, author of “The Fein Points of Tennis: Technique and Tacticsto Unleash Your Talent.
”Fein, a longtime tennis writer and instructor, has been playing the game since he was a teenager. Fein recently released the 511-page publication, featuring 53 instructional articles he wrote between 2007 and 2021.
Beyond the United States, Fein has covered tennis professionally in Japan, Australia, England, Germany and South Africa. After playing and reporting on tennis for decades, Fein was compelled to compile “The Fein Points of Tennis.”
“There’s a lot of aspects of tennis that are very appealing,” said Fein. “I love the athleticism. There’s a social side. There’s a completive side. It keeps the blood flowing and really keeps you mentally sharp.
”Fein takes great pride in the work he has accomplished as a tennis instructor in Chicopee. During a July 26 training sessionat Szot Park, he shared his favorite facets of the job.
“I like to see kids improve. Actually, sometimes you see them mature and grow enormously,” said Fein. “It’s both a team sport and an individual sport. It is a sport that requires every conceivable athleticability other than physical contact.”
Fein remarked that “super athletes” such as Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant andAlex Rodriguez have all attested to the difficulty of tennis. In his recently-published book, Fein dissects the games of tennis stars including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams.
“The Fein Points of Tennis” also includes 90 action photos that bring to life the technique discussed in the text. The book touches on playing in the wind, the half volley, match momentum, running speed, the subtleties of touch shots and the arts of anticipation, lobbing and wrong-footing.
While writing the book, Fein interviewed a variety of professional coaches such as Pat Cash, Gene Mayer, Rick Macci, Toni Nadal, David Macpherson and Patrick Mouratoglou. In the text, he analyzes the “modern forehand, ”the “strike zone,” grip firmness, the importance of balance and the geometry of tennis.
